Subject: SnapAmp Troubles
Hi Tom,

The SnapAmp in one of my machines started giving me trouble yesterday.

The computer was on and the machine had been homed and used to run a couple of parts, but then I got a KMotion DLL disconnect error. I powered down the card, checked the USB cable connection, restarted the KMotionCNC software and SnapAmp and everything seemed okay. Then I started getting the DLL error every few minutes. Most of the machine was shut off and there shouldn't have been any issues with noise.

There wasn't any errors on the console screen and the Analog and digital screens seemed okay. I noticed the upper LED on the SnapAmp was off, so I shut the system down for the day.

When I restarted it today, the SnapAmp LED was blinking normally, but when I tried to initialize the machine the DLL error came up again. The LED was not blinking at the normal rate and it reminded me of someone having trouble breathing. Every time I tried to initialize the DLL error came up and the KFlop would briefly disconnect and then re-connect.

Would you have any suggestions of things I could check?

Thanks in advance,
David.

Hi David,

Sorry to hear that.  I can't think of anything specific that might be.  Since it seems to fail when you initialize, which is when the drive is enabled and voltage is applied to the motors, maybe something like a short or break in the motor wiring?  Maybe disconnect each motor cable from SnapAmp (always with power completely off) to see if you can isolate it.

Regards

Hi Tom,

Thanks for that. I disconnected the motor wiring completely and I am still getting the same pattern from the SnapAmp LED. Is there anything else that comes to mind I could check?

Best regards,
David.

Hi David,

Maybe the cable between KFLOP and SnapAmp?

Power supply voltages?  How is KFLOP+SnapAmp being powered?  An External +5V supply?

Besides disconnecting the Motors is the Motor Supply Disconnected?

You might try commenting out sections in the Initialization C Program to isolate what step initiates the problem?

Hi Tom,

I swapped the small ribbon cable between KFLOP and SnapAmp.

KFLOP and SnapAmp have a dedicated 5V 3A supply.

I disconnected the main plug for SnapAmp to the motor's power supply and motor leads.

None of those seemed to make any difference. I guess the SnapAmp has internal trouble. When I replaced it with another card everything works as expected. My concern is what caused the problem in the first place.

Best regards,
David.
